Professor Ghulam Mufti is head of the haematology department at King’s College Hospital. He works with a team of nine other professors who are experts in various medical fields to include gene therapy, stem cell biology and bone marrow transplants. The Professor also deals with 86 researchers who focus on treating leukaemia.
Using special equipment, he works with cells that can be used to regenerate a patient’s damaged cells and even organs. Cellular therapy plays a key role in this and the professor identifies ways to preserve certain cells which are beneficial to patients.
The Professor commented: “The support of LIBRA is vital to the research department and during the the early days working conditions were tough. I originally worked alongside a small team of just two doctors and we struggled to afford equipment. Due to the support of LIBRA the department has grown with great success and I now work with a larger team and we are achieving fantastic results.”
